Missionary Moments Planning Guide

FEBRUARY 2010

February 7, 2010: God's Provision Around the World

Morning: “Zoe” and her husband, “Max,” believing national friends of JERRY and TRACEY BOYD, received a computer as a belated wedding gift on the very day they gave up hope of buying one. Like many other customers, Zoe and Max were denied credit at a local store because of the global financial crisis. A devout Muslim named Guy (not his real name), who knew of their difficulties obtaining a computer, happened to be present when friends walked in with the computer they had purchased for Zoe and Max’s wedding gift. Guy doubted Zoe’s faith when she said she believed that God would allow her to have a computer so she could continue her coursework at a university. God is showing His provision around the world, and your church is part of this provision as you consistently participate in the Cooperative Program (CP). Add Jerry and Tracey to your prayer list this week. John 8:29 The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.

February 7, 2010: Impacting the Kingdom of God

Evening: ANNE DECKER is a North American missionary and Director of Partnership and Mobilization for Vision San Diego. She uses her interests, gifts, and passions to impact the Kingdom of God, thanks in part to our vision for, and commitment to, Cooperative Program. Anne’s role allows her the opportunity to work alongside local churches to help them understand the importance of having partners and how to host mission teams, as well as talking with potential partners concerning how they can serve in San Diego. New churches are being started, and existing churches are being strengthened to help reach San Diego for Christ. Your prayers for Anne and the churches in the San Diego area are needed this week. STATEMENT: In doing what pleased the Father, Jesus knew that God was with Him. When we give to please God, we will find His presence confirmed in our lives also.

February 14, 2010: Appalachian Trail Chaplains

Morning: CRAIG and SUZY MILES are directors of Appalachian Trail Servants and Mission Service Corp Missionaries with the North American Mission Board. They work with long distance hikers on the Appalachian Trail, a 2,176-mile hiking trail that covers 14 states from Georgia to Maine. Craig and Suzy go alongside hikers and send out dedicated "Trail Chaplains" to spend six months hiking with these hiking enthusiasts. They also equip area churches to effectively and creatively serve the needs of the hikers. Ask the Lord to use our commitment to reaching people through Cooperative Program to plant gospel seeds in hearts of these hikers. Pray that the hikers Craig and Suzy encounter on the trail will connect the beauty of God's creation with the life-changing power of Christ. James 1:22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

February 14, 2010: Springfield, Tennessee meets West Africa

Evening: BECKY COUTS works with Wémé church members in West Africa and recently hosted 16 volunteers from Springfield Baptist Church in Springfield, Tennessee. The volunteers provided valuable assistance with the one-day Vacation Bible School, which more than 2,200 children from six village churches attended. Art projects and soccer provided fun and extra learning for the children. Prayerwalkers provided many divine appointments in which several people prayed to receive Christ. Even when the Ouémé River overflowed its banks and made village homes inaccessible, Springfield’s prayerwalkers went “prayerboating” instead, and from their dugout canoes, prayed for families impacted by the flood. Your prayers for and participation in the CP and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering are opening doors of opportunity across West Africa. Becky appreciates you and your prayers this week. STATEMENT: It is true. Evidence that we have been instructed by God’s Word is seen in the way we apply God’s truths in our daily lives. One obvious truth in the Bible is that God’s people give gratefully.

February 21, 2010: Can You Teach Me? I Want To Learn

Morning: After moving to Senegal, ROY THAGARD began a friendship with a local welder. When a group of volunteers came to help Roy’s team, he introduced them to the welder, who asked each of them what they did for a living. When it was time for the group leader, Justin, to speak, he told the welder that he teaches the Bible. “Can you teach me? I want to learn,” the welder said. We discovered later that the welder had already heard stories from the Old Testament, since Muslims and Christians include them in their teachings. After sharing, we were invited by the welder to eat supper at his house where he accepted a New Testament from the volunteers. Roy and his team are impacting those living in Senegal with the help of our faithful support through Cooperative Program. Today let’s pray that the Author and Finisher of our faith will reshape the welder’s heart. Matthew 6:2-4 So whenever you give to the poor, don’t sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. I assure you: They’ve got their reward! But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

February 21, 2010: New Multiethnic Churches Needed in Ohio

Evening: Growing up in Korea, WOONG PARK did not know Jesus. When he came to the United States, he became a Christian and later a pastor. Today he and his wife, YOUN, are North American missionaries in Ohio. Concentrating on multiethnic church planting, Woong helps churches see the need for and start new congregations. New churches are needed, especially among the growing number of Somalis, Burmese, Russians, and Arabic-speaking people in Ohio. Ask God to use our prayers and our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering to impact the growing ethnic population in Ohio. STATEMENT: Our giving is for God, not for the applause of other people. Motive guides how much we give as surely as it guides how we give. How God feels about our giving should be our primary concern.

February 28, 2010: North American Missionary in Eastern Idaho

Morning: JIM BALLARD is a North American missionary serving as Association Director of Missions and Church Planter Strategist for the Eastern Idaho Baptist Association. Jim and his wife, MYRTLE, are seeing great success in planting cowboy churches and Hispanic churches in every community, thanks in part to our ongoing commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program. Please take a moment to pray for the Ballards as they encourage and lead churches in the Eastern Idaho Baptist Association to creatively seek ways to reach their communities, and all of Idaho, for Christ. Psalm 100:1-3 Shout triumphantly to the LORD, all the earth. Serve the LORD with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Acknowledge that the LORD is God. He made us, and we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.

February 28, 2010: When the Commitment is Tested

Evening: KRISTI EMEISH has a heart for the people of Madagascar. It is a commitment that has been tested recently as the island nation has been weathering its share of political conflicts. During this time, missionaries to Madagascar attended an annual meeting with colleagues from other parts of Africa. The meeting provided much-needed interaction for the children of these workers and prayer for the adults. While Madagascar’s workers wait out the situation in their adopted home, they are humbled by the fact that only six years ago, the IMB had no missionary presence in the country. Kristi is grateful for your prayers and your willingness to combine your efforts with sister churches through the Cooperative Program (CP) that provides much-needed encouragement and support during tough times. Add Kristi and the rest of the Madagascar team to your prayer list this week. STATEMENT: Joy and service spring from gratitude; God has made us and claims us as His own. Let us be stewards of every opportunity to praise God through our giving.
